I absolutely love fancy nail art. I'm always looking for new ideas. I stumbled across this ladies YouTube channel and she has some of the most fantastic manicure ideas.

My suggestions:
Use melted wax and an old make up brush to 'paint' your fingers around your nail. It makes clean up much easier.
If you're using expensive nail polish I would use a smaller size cup so you're not wasting as much polish or dipping two fingers at once when the pattern allows for it.
